The endowment of one of Hanover's leading industrialists created this excellent art museum, which offers one of Germany's finest collections of modern art. Kurt Schwitter, the famous Dadaist, has a whole wing dedicated to his artwork. Leading lights such as Picasso, Klee and Chagall are also well-represented. Rotating exhibitions of contemporary photography, innovative media and up-and-coming regional artists make this a well-rounded venue.

Cartoon fans won't want to miss a visit to this incredible museum, housed in the equally magical Wallmoden Castle in Herrenhausen Garden. The focus here is on the tradition of cartoons and graphics, especially those by the German legend Wilhelm Busch, who created the popular series Max and Moritz. More than 500 years of illustrations are presented here, making the Wilhelm Busch Museum one of the finest museums of its kind in the world.

A famous local art group, the Kestner Society regularly hosts countless impressive art exhibitions each year, where emerging artists have often enjoyed early success before later notoriety. Such artists have included Georg Grosz, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, amongst others. Many of the exhibitions that take place here later tour the prominent galleries of Europe.
