Hanover Parks and Gardens: Picture of central gardensThe green lungs of Hanover truly help to keep this city in balance. Eilenriede Park is a particularly huge recreational space, located on the outskirts of Hanover, and offers something for everyone, with heavily forested areas and plenty of open spaces.

Arguably the star attraction of Hanover, Herrenhauser Gardens features an extensive series of interlinking gardens dating back to 1666, providing an idyllic respite for the residents of the city. The main parks and gardens are displayed below.

Hanover Parks and Gardens: Eilenriede Park - Adenauerallee 3, Hanover, Germany, DE
Larger than New York's Central Park, the Eilenriede is a massive forest area within the city parameters. A mixture of mature woodlands and grassy fields, the park is traversed by a trail network ideal for walking. However, nature isn't the only thing on offer, as beer gardens, cafés, mini golf and other diversions are scattered across the grounds, and just to the north lies the zoo and bird sanctuary.

Intermingled with the mature landscaping of trees and flowers at the beautiful Herrenhauser Gardens are fountains, walking paths and a grotto. The herb garden contains more than 10,000 different plants, while the Baroque style of the historic Grosser Garten (Large Garden) stands in symmetrical contrast to the English Garden and the more rugged feel of the Berggarten (Mountain Garden). A newly opened aquarium complex adds to the dimension of this hugely popular site. During the summer, festivals happen almost daily at the open-air theatre.
Hanover gardens open: daily - 08:00 to 17:00

Hanover Parks and Gardens: City Park (Stadtpark) - Clausewitzstrasse, Hanover, Niedersachsen, D-30175, Germany, DE
The centrally located Hanover City Park is the perfect green space, away from the nearby buildings and major city developments. With walking trails, plenty of wildlife to enjoy, and numerous floral displays, City Park is known locally as Stadtpark and is often busy at lunchtimes, when many people descend to eat their lunch in the sunshine.
Hanover gardens open: daily - dawn to dusk
